It’s all go in Hemel Hempstead - momentum is gat It’s all go in Hemel Hempstead - momentum is gathering for the big Dacorum at 50 parade on Sunday. If you’re in the area and would like to join the parade, we’d love to help you make a costume. All the materials and equipment you’ll need will be ready and waiting. Everyone welcome, we’ll give you loads of help to make something you’ll be really proud to wear! Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Spaces on the workshops are limited, so booking is essential. Please ensure you will be available for the parade on Sunday 29 September, if you are participating in a costume making workshop. Saturday 21 Sept Parade 11am-12noon FREE all welcome Join groups and people from Halifax and Calderdale as they welcome the puppet Little Amal with a vibrant and colourful parade from the Town Hall to the Piece Hall. Created by St Augustine’s and Handmade Productions as part of the Culturedale celebrations and inspired by nature and flowers. The parade will stop at different locations to watch and listen to performances before it weaves its way into the Festival of Integration. Come along and join in 10-11am busking in the Town Centre 11am-12noon Parade 10am-5pm Migration Yorkshire Festival of Integration www.migrationyorkshire.org.uk/festival Join us for art workshops in the Piece Hall to make flowers for a garden installation - 11am-1pm and 2-4.30pm
We’ve been making Yorkshire roses and flowers of We’ve been making Yorkshire roses and flowers of the world with community groups in Halifax. It’s almost time to turn these into a giant garland for Little Amal. We can’t wait to meet her and give her the warmest Yorkshire welcome! Are you joining us on Saturday? We’re meeting her at Halifax Town Hall at 11am and walking with her towards The Piece Hall. You can make her a flower at our workshop there, 11-1pm and 2-4.30pm. She’ll make her final appearance between 1-2pm. “Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee child at the heart of The Walk. She has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees. Since July 2021, Amal has travelled to 166 towns and cities in 17 countries and been welcomed by two million people on the street and by tens of millions online. 475 events unique to each community that she visits have been created for her by thousands of artists and civil society and faith leaders. Her journeys are festivals of art and hope that draw attention to the huge numbers of children fleeing war, violence and persecution, each with their own story. Her urgent message to the world is “Don’t forget about us”.”
Great masterclass today as part of our Colne Winte Great masterclass today as part of our Colne WinterBloom programme. Thanks so much to Richard Babington @whatrichcreates and Chris Ball @whatchriscreates for generously sharing your expertise on all things lighting. We’ve really enjoyed meeting all the participants and discussing different approaches to lighting artworks for parades and events. LOADS to think about, now we’ve just got to try and make sense of our hastily scribbled notes. Oh, and check out the fancy tracking light thing that we made happen by tweaking code!
Calderdale Tales and Trails is now live! We’re r Calderdale Tales and Trails is now live! We’re really excited about this project, it’s a @culturedale key commission and we’ll be working with community groups from right across Calderdale. In February 2025, a brand new outdoor performance will be touring Calderdale, but first we’ve got to make it! Step one is research, character development and deciding on the narrative. In collaboration with 4 community groups and a whole host of creative partners, we’re diving into the rich history of Calderdale Folklore. It’s fascinating stuff, and we’re very lucky to have the expertise of Holly and John from @folklorecentretodmorden - they’re full of fantastic stories and incredible inspiration. EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS, only 4 places available EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS, only 4 places available so book early to avoid disappointment! ✨5 day Giant Lantern Masterclass✨ Monday 23rd until Friday 27th Sept 9.30am-4pm There are 4 places available on a first come first serve basis Total cost for 5 days = £400 Join Handmade Productions former Artistic Director, Kerith Ogden as she guides you through how to create 2 large static outdoor lanterns. In this 5 day masterclass you’ll learn about the whole process from design to installation and have creative input into the decoration and finishing of the structures. Expect to learn in detail about surface decoration, low voltage LED lighting systems and building structures from timber, metal and withies. We’ll also take you through basic lantern lighting techniques (also applicable to puppets and costumes), different lighting options, connections and power sources that are available. This is also an opportunity to meet other puppet makers from Handmade Productions, connect to fellow early career artists and to see a number of artworks up close. About Kerith: Kerith Ogden @redant_art is a freelance maker and illustrator based in West Yorkshire, UK. She has worked in the outdoor arts sector as an artist, director, event organiser and facilitator for 25 years, and specialises in making colourful, sculptural, outdoor lanterns and giant puppets, with a very strong focus on environmentally sustainable materials and processes. Recent work includes commissions for Kew Gardens, Artichoke, Wild Rumpus, Walk the Plank, RSPB, Preston Caribbean Carnival, Bluedot festival, and Handmade Productions
